Diplomacy in Modern Global Politics
On the 12th of March 2015, IIUM Model United Nations Club (IIUM MUN) had the pleasure of hosting Tan Sri Razali Ismail, a distinguished Malaysian diplomat and former President to United Nations Security Council and the General Assembly for the talk on “Diplomacy in Modern Global Politics: Finding A Solution” at the Senate Hall, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). The event was also graced by the attendance of Datuk Kenneth Luis, Malaysia’s Former Ambassador to UNESCO in Paris, as well as the Rector of IIUM, Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr. Zaleha and Deputy Rector of Students Affairs of IIUM, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mizan bin Hitam.
The event marked the first collaboration between United Nations Association of Malaysia (UNAM) and IIUM MUN Club to further the interest of the youth’s towards diplomacy, international relations, and global issues. Given Tan Sri Razali’s illustrious background, it was hoped that the students would benefit from this experience-sharing session; especially on the intricacies of diplomacy, and the reality of finding a common solution at global level. As also mentioned by Datuk Kenneth in his closing remarks, the youths shoulder great responsibility to ensure that the path of moderation stays on course through rational discourses, collaborations and mutual respect.
Tan Sri Razali’s core message touched on the importance of holding true to universal principles for the best interest of humanity. Often times, the world is conflicted due to blind adherence to partisanship and self-interests, thus delaying many efforts to remedy the sickness of the world we are living in be it environmental, humanitarian, or even wars & conflicts. Essentially, Tan Sri Razali urged the young minds to believe in themselves in changing the course of the world, as had been proven in his personal situation–a lad from the paddy field of Alor Setar who made it through at the United Nations.
In the closing half of the event, Datuk Kenneth Luis expressed his hope on behalf of UNAM for IIUM MUN Club to continue being the front-runner of intellectual advocacy and progressive youth movement in fostering the spirit as global citizens. Datuk Kenneth Luis also took the opportunity to officially launch IIUM MUN Club on behalf of the Secretary-General of UNAM, Dato‘ Zainal Abidin, thus making it the 7th Model United Nations club in Malaysia.
